Use the CSI (Construction Specifications Institute) MasterFormat. There are 16 categories, or "Divisions" of trades:

Div. 1- General Requirements
- Site Work
- Concrete
- Masonry
- Metals
- Wood and Plastics
- Thermal and Moisture Protection
- Doors and Windows
- Finishes
- Specialties
- Equipment
- Furnishings
- Special Construction
- Conveying Systems
- Mechanical
- Electrical

See if your office has a full copy, as there are sub-divisions for anything you can image. It will give you a complete cataloging/numbering system for your company's samples.
