But I will add this impressionistic note:
Not long ago on US TV, the elder Mr and Mrs George Bush were interviewed about their son, for whom they of course expressed unqualified support...
At a certain point, however, the interviewer asked what most impressed them about their son. The father mentioned his strong religious belief; but just as he said it, I thought I noticed a brief shadow of -doubt? hesitation? uncertainty? -which crossed his face momentarily...
It could be just an illusion: but I think the most important questions about American behavior, in this period, relate to religion.....
