I have been only once and 31 years ago to Portugal but both in Oporto and Lisboa there are nice old stone buildings. Maybe we have more in Spain since the area is wider but well, I see no point in advising not choosing Portugal except for some reason of the practical kind Martin points to.

In the end the traditional kinds of masonry are not as much in number ... it is only a matter of seeing what precise kind one wants to use (here it seems through imitation). With some exceptions, even some beautiful buildings in stone are merely cladded with it. This is more or less mockery of the olden ways, but price and modern structural standards many times do not allow otherwise.
