visiting some of the Italian hill villages near here (in Liguria), it is remarkable to see how such exquisite places have come out of ordinary and partially haphazard circumstances.

Building up because of a lack of space, keeping within the confines of the village for communal safety, narrow streets to keep cool in the summer, the crazy curving streets intended to confuse invaders, the hilltop site chosen because it is difficult to attack, local materials used because that was what was nearby.
