I just meant it sounded like you think that people are more violent now than before and that is as unlikely as thinking the opposite--that "it can't happen here". Violence is ingrained and we always strive for peace and justice. I do however find that general civility is low in the United States: in the past people were just (very) uncivil to you based on race or nationality, and kindly to their own kind.
