"ing" in english makes a noun of a verb in some instances. So the term may have developed: as a "rendering" is the result of the verb "to render", and "droppings" are the result of the verb "to drop".

There are not too many words like this. "Creation" is the result of the verb "to create" but "buildation" did not become a word somehow.

That's my guess.
