Peter: I was looking for something in the original post that I could support. It seems the poster was taking the hard line modernist view that a building's componants should always appear as they are; never be covered up by paint, drywall, what have you. I don't agree, because I think it is sometimes necessary. It was the idea of necessity that I was trying to get to: don't add to the detail if it is unnecessary to do so. 'Still a debatable point certainly....
