It varies per project, but our contracts sometimes are organized thusly: Schematic Design -15% Design Development- 20% Construction Documents- 30% Bidding/Negotiation- 5% Construction Administaration - 30%. If you work for a "design firm" you are less likely to do much significant design work (until you are a seasoned architect). Some technical ability is required to be an effective designer, in my view, and this must be developed over time.
