the idea of the "automated home" goes back to the 1950's and 1960's - I suggest watching Jacques Tati's film "Mon Oncle".

the technology for the essentials of the systems are not new, although the control systems will be more compact and efficient.
There are endless examples dating from that era which really did not have the type of impact expected, although, if looked at more seriously, there are important uses, such as for helping disabled people in their homes.
