In my view (and in more of following the very proper advices by d) you have it easy in that you may built your line of thought around historical lines. As d very awarely says, you may be in accord or not, because there's such expression in reality, and at the same time many times there's not. What explains it to be the case is that the owners intently oblige one or another behaviour as thier will follows. Yet in the end the buildings are always built by the technology of the era.
