It's like any other profession. The fact that it CAN have a global market doesn't compell an architect to expand globally. Most are satisfied to work locally or nationally and they have all the work they can handle in doing so. There are good reasons for staying small, too. The larger an organization becomes, the more unwieldy and inflexible it becomes. Control over projects is much easier when the scope of your operations is smaller and more localized. Besides, it takes a lot of money to market your services abroad, and to hire staff in other countries. This is something only the largest of architectural firms can afford to do.
