Gillian is right. The erection of the Spire throws the rest of O'Connell Street into shocking relief. It highlights the need to not only spruce up the thoroughfare's pavements and central island, but to tear down around a third of the buildings too and replace them with facades that will define the city as a signature street for the 21st century. The block of buildings north of the GPO (the one that includes the Dublin Bus building, Dr Quirkey's, and the Royal Dublin Hotel) should receive the wrecking-ball treatment as a matter of priority. And while I'm on the subject, will somebody please see about replacing the sign on the Ambassador theatre with something more tasteful.
