Aside from the health of the tree, I'd be more concerned about the long-term consequences of the root system burrowing beneath the foundation, as well as the threat of the tree toppling onto the roof during a storm. As one who has a tree growing in my small flagstoned courtyard, this weighs on my mind frequently. The tree is bordered on two sides by a wooden fence, and it looms above my garage roof. The shade and sheltering from the north wind is great, but I wonder about the damage that could result to my flagstone paving, or my garage.
