I would like to suggest an amendment to this quote from the article:

While students may not consciously notice or appreciate the newer design elements, an attractive facility may subliminally increase their mental productivity, spark creativity, and encourage them to spend more time there.

It seems that perhaps our position as designers would be strengthened if we presumed in our arguments the necessity for good design. No discussion of buildings to be used in educating our children should be allowed to descend to the level of having to justify a decent, pleasing environment.
