American art critic Lionel Trilling had it about right:

"Great artists steal, poor artists copy."

If you steal it's likely you have some real understanding of the worth of your theft and the depth of its meaning but also you will know how to turn it to other use. If you copy you're simply concerned with superficial effect.

A bit of architecural larceny is OK: but just about anybody can trace or scan a plan.
