How about "reactive" armor?
Plates of this stuff explode outward when they are hit by projectiles, neutralizing the force of the attack....

Or buildings could be covered with a gooey matrix which slows and encapsulates anything which tries to breach it.

Or...

Perhaps we will have "dummy" buildings which look like important symbolic structures but are actually hollow...THINK of it.
