Get construction experience of any kind in the meantime (some states even give some (leser) credit for "internship" under a contractor). Draw copies of professional drawings--that is, if you make up your own they may look too far off for an architect to review. You have to state the drawing is a copy, but try to understand what you are copying, so you learn as well as avoid glaring errors. Just the fact you can work in CAD on a realistic drawing will then be the point made.

Get your portfolio trim, professional and in a reduced book form, having larger drawings on hand to show as requested. Good luck.
