A local Member of the Scottish Parliament who serves on a transport committee has become so concerned at the escalating costs of bridge maintenance that she has called for a discussion on its demolition and substitution by something, simpler, cheaper and easier to maintain. This argument could be applied to everything from the Golden Gate to thev Eiffel Tower to the Katsura Palace. Do we really live in such culturally impoverished times?
