I'm an thoughts on actually building ON the site? Well, it would destroy the site, it's context, and the information archaeologists retreive from them. Hence, building on an archaeological site would not protect it in any sense of the word. Now, building around it, excavating it to completion before construction - these are options, but usually expensive. I'm also an architectural historian, and I indeed love art and architecture of all kinds. I am conflicted especially since archaeological sites are so neglected compared to the observable, readily identifiable historic architectural buildings. If someone were to ask, I would suggest against building on top of an archaeological site - they are rare, and certainly constructing on one would destroy it. However, I'm open to other suggestions. :)
