it is a social problem in which architects are almost by definition involved - and there are, certainly in Britain, many examples of architects who have tried to do a great deal against often serious opposition (one example being architects mentioned in Hugh Pearman's article, Levitt Bernstein).
today ? I believe it to be much more difficult, if not impossible. The notion of social consciensce is seen as a mere affectation and a cover for some bit of hidden "cleverness".
it requires a notion of society, of community, of mutual social responsibility. That will be for the up and coming generation - because they are naive idealists ? No, because our generation (middle years) has failed and merely produced the puppets of self-interest like Bush and Blair.
