This is quite interesting. I have been thinking on similar lines for quite some time now. I think, density and a healthy mix of cultures is the key. I come from a big, crowded urban metropolis from a different part of the world, and now live in the US. But I have realized that dense urban forms have a unique but universal quality about them. They make us more tolerant, more open, more humane or human ......... I guess that is freedom. And that's why cities are the physical form of freedom.
Ken, your last sentence sums it all up.
