Can't help D on the US matters but I most emphatically agree with JF's observations regarding business and how to make things happen. These are things we all had to pick on the job when we left university or college and it's an imperfect way to do it. You miss so many opportunities of being useful in society. There seems to be some presumption, still, on the one hand that architects have private incomes and do it for the hell of it and don't care how many beans make five and on the other that great design, pure and simple, on its own, can make the difference.

Architecture and business skills need each other. Design geniuses are few and far between and the rest of us must make a consistent and effective, if unsung, contribution to society. D should find himself a strong designer; as a team they'd be unbeatable.
