With brutalist design, the function of a building is emphasized rather than its appearance. Although Brutalism does make it a point to appear as it does from the exterior with its use of concrete blocks, these blocks are used more as a means to reduce the cost of construction. In the United States, univeristies have adpoted this style partly because of this reason. Furthermore, Brutalism allows such an institution to appear contemporary and thus liven their campus.
