Of course architects do such things as designing the shape of the buildings ... this is maybe their main task, but there are lots of many more things that they do and have been -customarily and by law- doing.
For example, in Spain an architect is by the mandate of the law also the warranting party of that the bulding he undersigns is in accord with life safety standards, and also serviceability standards. That is, that the building serves well, and is safe.
Have not the lesser doubt that for any building you see a particular man or woman has designed or elected the shape. Sometimes other parties share or grab from the architect such kind of task -they being in fact if not by law the actual architects- but in developed countries normally graduated and licensed architects design and decide what particular shape will take what is to be built in a site.
