It is true that many times the link between a fine art, such as painting, and the architecture that is influenced by it, is many times not evident to the naked eye. However, I would not question for a second that such a link exists. All of the arts deal with different sub-sets of the same groups of issues. The visual arts wrestle with the ideas of composition, color, emotion, and attitude all without a voice to explain the intentions. As does Architecture in its ability to effect the mood and actions of the user, without so much as a hello from the architect. The performance arts constantly challenge the human form through movement and costume. Architecture uses space and light to challenge the human scale. It is through the other fine arts that we as Architects can, and should, begin to understand all of the underlying themes that make a building, space, or place worthwhile. The object is not to create a building as purely a piece of art. A building should be beautiful in its own right, however it is far more important that the architect understand the principles that cause the emotional reactions to space, color, movement, and light. It is through the exploration of the fine arts that one can achieve the knowledge of these important tools.
