I would like to design my own home, but I am not sure where to get started.

I would like to design something that isn't the cookie cutter design of typical american homes. I would like to have a country home with some possible swiss influence.

I have done some searches, but usualy find sites offering typical plans. Is there some good websites, books, libraries, university libraries, etc. that i should be exploring? What kinds of search criteria help get the best results, what should i start looking for? Should I contact an architect to help me get started?
