In reading the items, below, from the news section of ARCHITECTURE WEEK, one gets the idea that Thom is largely correct. Who really is in charge of the re-building of Ground Zero? If Mr. Siverstein has "contractual rights to rebuild" than why was there this sham of a competition that resulted in a massive contract with Libeskind? Has Libeskind be hoaxed? Has the public been hoaxed? Is there nothing to prevent Mr. Silverstein from doing as he pleases, including ignoring the Libeskind plan and design? What kind of hoaky "stuff" has gone on, that the Port Authroity entered such a contract with Mr. Silverstein, as to give him virtually unfettered control? And yes, what of the other groups who have endorsed Libeskind's solution, and who are "pleading" for adherence to the NYC building and fire codes [there should be NO need for such pleading-- period; the PA is NOT above the law!]
My perception is that this is a grand mess which may be resolved, eventually, in a less than satisfactory manner, and to the massive benefit and profite of Mr. Silverstein. Oh, yes, Libeskind gets a nice award plaque for the wall of his office-- little, if anything else!
