I think the role of Architect as Artistic Hero has been declining since the turn of the century, however it will always be with us to some degree. Building is becoming a much more collaborative effort, which means that architects are exposing their skills (or lack thereof) to a larger audience and potentially effecting the direction of a project on a more primary level. It is not that artistic content is obsolete; clients still recognize that design has the ability to sell projects, but clients are less interested in spending money where they see no tangible return. But there are many opportunities for genius even within the context of economically driven projects. The architect's role today however is typically concerned with working within the limits of project constraints, making his input less and less autonomous. If you want to be a Hero, there are easier ways.
