In fact it is an architect pondering on the psichological components of judging a competition so massively attended. In passing,i will note that architecture is after all about the creation of an artifactual environment in or about which PEOPLE live.As such,if you are an architect, you no doubt consider how (when designing anything) those people react, feel, are chalenged or cuddled the "program"may be.That comes under the heading of Psichology.Indeed it is Architects not doctors who design hospitals,Architects not pilots who design airports and preciously few morticians design Memorials. You wrote:"And I know that you will never win a competition where the impetus for the effort is one that you don't believe in".Obviously, the impetus for Anyone participating in a competition is to win it.It follows (according to you) that no one beliveing that they won't win, will win.Or perhaps you think that if one thinks that a particular "program" for a competition is fundamentaly frivoluous they cannot possibly submit a winning entry.Evoching M. Buonarotti's design for the saint Peter's,won't do.Beliveing in the program is not the same as beliveing in the design.Velasques, Leonardo,Rembrandt, etc.executed masterpiece portraits of utterly ordinary rich bourgeois folk whose names are inconsequential to History. You say that" great art comes from the soul and cannot be faked",yet museums the world over have been deluged with GREAT ART subseqently proven as fakes.More over a notion such as"soul"is devoid of content because it is infinitely interpretable. It means nothing, precisely because it means everything.(I await your next comment,as what has philosophy to do with architecture)
.I am surprised that you missed (the obvious) intended absurdity of proclaming all deaths equaly worthy of memorialising, since by this principle we should build a memorial to Hitler,Pol Pot, Stalin,Joe six pac and every deceased human being unfortunate enough to have choked with nobody around trained in the Heimlich manouver.
