Here is something that you should consider:

The Washington Alexandria Architecture Consortium (This is one of Virginia Techís extension campuses. The WAAC has faculty from several schools... including one or two from Cal Poly, and has a great Masterís Program)

http://www.waac.vt.edu

Every Architecture school is different. Thus it is not possible to compare East verses West. The best thing is to visit each school and go to the school that feels right.

I went to school at VT and am very happy for it (5 yr Bach of Arch).

Good luck,
-Paul
