1. Make sure you have a first-class roofing installation, preferably a membrane, with good flashing and positive drainage.
2. Ensure the deck framing is held free from the roofing over the entire area.
3. Understand water will drain through the 2x decking and drain across the roofing; make sure you allow for the outflow under the deck framing into a gutter and downspouts.
4. Use pressure-treated lumber for ALL of the deck structure as well as the decking.
