Yes- 30K to 40K to start is pretty typical. 50K to 60K after 10 years in todays dollars is pretty typical. That can vary of-course depending on how much added value you bring. Getting your feet wet as an assistant is a good idea if you can afford it. If you have the capital you can do side line work, just like anybody else, though architecture is very often a 50 + hour/week situation. You didn't mention kids, but that would sideline those side jobs pretty quickly.
