yes, you should be upfront with the firm. They may be very pleased that you take an interest.

what you are considering is a long and costly study so make sure that it is right for you - money is only part of it and, as you quite correctly said, there are associated areas (such as building houses for yourself) that can earn more than just a salary.

you sound rational enough to do well.
