At the home building school for inexperienced men and women (including recent architectural grads) that I operate and teach at - one of the books that I recommend is the Lupe DiDonno & Phyillis Spirling book - How To Design and Build Your Own House. The first part takes one through a step by step design process for making sure that your house fits you. A second section of the book is a how to build your own house - a good basic reference book. The third part is a great step by step how to do it as well as a scheduler.
In terms of software at the low end - try before you buy or don't buy. Broderbund's 3D Home Architect (about $60 USD) isn't bad - but its not great. SO again - make sure you can try the software before you buy. A great software package is SketchUp but not cheap - about $500 USD. Another sketch type software is Design Center 3D a $15 USD package that's pretty good for designin - if its still available.
But again it takes 5 minutes to learn how to draft - do you really need a software package?
