I think it might be closer to 25% than 99%. You need to give the architect more credit than you are giving. Most designers rely on experience of the past and present and what constitutes some design as being prototype. With respect to your bench example, it doesn't hold water as most architects wouldn't design the bench but would select the bench that some industrial designer designed.

I would then say that yes, 99% of most architects don't design park benches...before during or after the pen hits the paper...and you are correct! But maybe 25% of architects design buildings with no regard to how it is used both inside and out. Owner's choice and the almighty dollar in 99% of those cases I would say drive these results.
