If the memorial design winner is butt ugly (your words) they will still achieve fame, and will have deserved it, especially if their work captures all that we aspire to see in a permanent memorial to that day's events. Since when is fame and recognition NOT a valid reward for excellence and competitive distinction???
LMDC has stated that they are digitally photographing in hi-resolution all the memorial entries, and that there will be an online archive released some time in the future. They also have budgeted $250,000 for an exhibit at World Financial Center, displaying perhaps the top 200+ proposals. I suspect this will become a travelling exhibit as well.
