It's not a threat. I'm just saying be careful what you wish for.
I entered the competition with the hope that my design is included in a book of entries, perhaps in a curated exhibit. That's good enough for me. The competition itself is a memorial.
Anyone who thinks their design has a reasonable chance of making it to stage 2 should read about Maya Lin's (mostly miserable) experience in Washington, DC.
I suspect the selection process will become highly politicized and will shift focus from the designs to the personalities and politics of the designers. Hopefully the jury will be independent enough to resist pressure to select a design based on factors unrelated to the design itself, but this is New York, so I doubt that will stop people from trying. There is so much at stake that it is hard to imagine this process not being tainted by backroom deals, mudslinging, etc.
Imagine what will happen if one of the favored designers is French.
