It would seem I've become somewhat of a moderator of this particular thread I initiated, but I'm not. I simply enjoy
coversation, especially if more people in
the competition would respond without fear of being disqualified. There are other discussions and forums. I chose this one. I needn't apologize for my
enthusiasm, nor the way I express myself
beyond the typical sound bytes I'm sure
you yourself have come across. Most are
hardly worth reading, if you know what I mean?

I wish your husband well and hope he
returns safely home. My military tour
was way back in 1962-65, but it wasn't
combat duty. I worked with computers,
when they were as big as houses and made a lot of noise. Do you remember the punched card system in use at that time?
Yeah, I'm THAT old. Met my present wife
through a Love Connection ad in a local
paper. I told her I was tall, dark and handsome. She didn't buy it. We've been
happily married ever since. My daughter
lives in Manhattan. She took me to see Ground Zero, and we both cried that day.
Returned home and decided to enter the memorial competition.

However it turns out for you personally,
the decision to share your design with
the man you love makes perfect sense. And
if he showed others, so what? The mere
fact you were willing to take that chance
tells me how much you value the joy of
sharing your life with him. Letters are
nice. But a copy of your design, to me,
says a whole lot more. I doubt the LMDC
has a Police Guideline Control vehicle
cruising the streets of Tikrit searching
for your memorial concept. But if you're
really worried they might disqualify you, may I suggest a remedy?: Hide it amongst the weapons of mass destruction -they'll
never find it!

Louise Huxtable (sp?), architecture
critic, made a keen observation about
Libeskind's slurry wall -that because
the wall will need to be covered by a protective sheet of glass, it will lose
all of it's symbolic power and result in little more than an artifact under glass,
essentially, something more suited to
a museum case. What do you think? In my
design, I didn't know WHAT to do with that wall, except to leave enough space
for visitors to walk along it's entire
length. I imagine there will be the temptation to inscribe victims' names
onto the glass surface. But again, I wasn't sure how to include what he calls his centerpiece into my overall scheme.

Listen, not to worry. Most of the
presentation boards probably received
less than a glance in that secret
warehouse of theirs, mine included.
I showed a few people what I finally put together -including the cat hairs stuck
to the spray-mount glued pages- and all I can say is, Bob the cat thouroughly
enjoyed the added comfort of sleeping on a foam board, instead of the hood of my
neighbor's car. Take care. Good luck.
