A void is certainly a powerful way to make the point that something is missing.
There is no "right answer" to the question of what is the best memorial, especially now, just two years after the event.
My main point is that I think it is important for the primary structure to be visible from a distance, mainly for the benefit of people who live nearby but do not often go to the WTC site (several million people).
You can also incorporate a void into a tall structure. The NYU library offers one such example.
In hindsight, it would have been an interesting experiment for the LMDC to have set up a forum like this one where entrants could discuss issues like this as the competition was taking shape. It would have been unusual for a design competition, but nothing about this competition is typical.
I personally would have liked to see the jury narrow the field to a few dozen concepts, and then invite an open discussion among designers prior to the next stage. This would give designers the opportunity to learn from each other's work and possibly regroup to combine designs.
My concern about the competition as it is structured is that it forced designers not to talk to each other. I think it would have been better if they had allowed a fairly open second stage that would have vetted out the obvious crap, and allowed a free discussion among designers. I am sure this would have influenced the designs, and would have given the jury insight into the entrant's thinking.
I understand the need for secrecy, but I think they have gone overboard with it.
Oh well, we'll see what they picked soon enough. I am rooting for the forty story tall weeping bald eagle that was featured on CNN a few months ago (just kidding).
