If anyone on the jury feels your sentiments, then I think I have a shot. I agree with you, the centerpiece of the memorial needs to be tall and rise from the Libeskind 'shards of glass'. When I first looked at the Libeskind towers and felt that the top 'facets' of the towers all pointed to the center of the pit, I felt that something of significance had to go there. Not just from an emotional standpoint, but physically as well to remind visitors of the scale of what was lost on that terrible day. Like you, I memorialized the towers and have two reminders of the scale and magnificence of the Trade Center as well as the 3,022 innocent souls lost. Beyond that, I also had a very significant element devoted to the rescuers. I don't think that I would have offended the families who believe that all that died must be honored equally (I do that, too), because my rescuer element honors all of the rescuers (the survivors, those who perished and those who responsed to the search and rescue after the 11th.
I didn't try to 'Ace' the design competition, but I did take all of the interested parties' wants, needs and desires into account. But I'll post my entry when Phase 2 begins and then you can judge for yourself.
Good luck to you all. But no matter what happens, I think that in the end we will all win with a wonderful memorial.
