If I remember correctly (from my architectural history class). I believe the dome of Hagia Sophia sits on a certain number of clerestory windows so when light comes streaming in it gives the illusion that the dome is floating. I believe St. Peters Basilica has a similar design to give a similar effect. You may have to dig deeper on this information since I'm just going off of memory. Good Luck!
