Jan,
You've given me quite a bit to think about, so I think I'll respond to just a small portion first, and post a more comprehensive response later. Thank you for your thoughtful, personal, and heartfelt post.
You asked:
What does it mean, to create "a statement of enduring and universal symbolism"?First, your reflection and response to this question is comprehensive and completely valid.
Second, I believe that the "drafters" did not know themselves how it would be interpreted. My guess is that they agreed without dissention that the language was correct, and that whatever it might inspire, it would be a "good thing," but I believe they were drawing a collective "blank" which they were hoping we would fill it in ways they couldn't imagine.
By the way, nobody has mentioned them... The "drafters" are in limbo too, but even worse than we are, because they don't even have their own proposal to cling to as they wait for something from the jury. Since they acted as our "clients," they must be absolutely bursting to know what the process will produce. It must have been like writing the assembly directions for the perfect toy, or the receipe for the most satisfying meal when every child or every person would be waiting to judge the outcome.
Sincerely,
Hugh
