This phenomenom is called 'entasis' - if all of the columns were equally spaced, without a bulge toward the base, or were perfectly vertical, the human eye would perceive them as being unequal and leaning toward the viewer. By exagerating the perspective, the columnar spacing and proportions appear to be closer to perfect by means of optical illusion
