You originally stated:
...I would not accept any payment for my design...This competition represents life lost, you can't put a price tag on that! The honor of being chosen should be compensation enough.
My concern, which you did not address in your response, is that you are equating being compensated for design work with accepting blood money. You also argue that prestige and fame (i.e. "the honor of being chosen") ARE compensation; and it can also be inferred from your statement that compensation in this form IS ethical, whereas payment for design services IS NOT, at least in this case.
Design matters; designers should be compensated well, and revered for their contributions to society. This should be even more the case when the stakes are so high. {That was the reason I was so dismayed by the paltry 40K stipends awarded previously by LMDC for the design study, and so unexpectedly pleased by their recomputation of the value of this design competition: 100K for a much smaller and less complex scope of work.}
That said, I do not have a problem with the rest of your response, AND, by the way, consider my primary motivation to be a "calling" to employ my design skills in a personal response to the events of 9/11, NOT any desire for the commission. Now, all I really want is an opportunity for my proposal to speak to as many people as possible, which means, in the best case, being selected as a finalist, and otherwise being widely published in some form.
