There's been a lot of talk about the benefits of winning (money, fame, noteriety, etc.), but I haven't heard of anyone lamenting about the inevitable fallout of having been a key member on the selected design team. Or worse yet, the selected designer. I recently read an interview of Maya Lin published on the New Yorker website (attached, credit to William Stratas and Planetcast) talking about all of the negative outcomes she encountered by designing such an emotionally divisive memorial. We are already seeing the same political shenanigans between Libeskind and Silverstein.
My memorial design was a vision of what I believed should go there: I may have missed the mark completely, but who knows. The point that I'm trying to make is the final design will be subject to incomprehensible scrutiny. Even if the winning memorial was divinely inspired and sanctified by the hand of God, it will be excoriated and crucified in the court of public opinion.
I just hope whoever wins this thing is mentally prepared for the inevitable fire storm.
