A couple of examples come to mind. For example, go to http://www.subsurfacebuildings.com/Page2.html and scroll down to the paragraph about the Brunson Instrument Company. Another cool example is the Wabasha Street Caves in St. Paul, Minnesota; sorry I can't send you a good photo link for that one. It was a gangster-era speakeasy, and it has building facades flush against a rock cliff.
