A couple of examples come to mind. For example, go to and scroll down to the paragraph about the Brunson Instrument Company. Another cool example is the Wabasha Street Caves in St. Paul, Minnesota; sorry I can't send you a good photo link for that one. It was a gangster-era speakeasy, and it has building facades flush against a rock cliff.
