A fascinating story! We're still researching this, and we'd love to hear from anyone else who can illuminate the question.
We have discovered that the north part of the Tower of London was damaged during an air raid on London in 1940. That could explain heaps of ashes in 1941. But no info yet for 1841! We'll keep looking...
