If you're in Toronto, visit the University of Toronto Graduate Housing Building by Morphosis. That is an example of an award-winning building that successfully satisfied a set of practical criteria (including a measly $55 a square foot construction budget) and surpassed expectations about what a building of those modest means can achieve aesthestically. It's an icon and a gateway to the university. It elicits a response from people, whether you like it or not, is often irrelevant. The fact that it contributes in a positive manner to its surroundings given the circumstances makes it good architecture.
