Sorry, - I am not American or English - I am an Indonesian, so I hope you don't mind if I have bad language, I hope you will understand what I will introduce you. Here we are:
Actually, this is as interesting matter for along time to me. That for, I have been studying many science. Up to know, what I can share for you is :
1. You have to know everything from many science. Environment is very various thing. It can be our planet (Earth), or land and ocean, or atmosphire, or community, or infrastructure, or anything else.
2. I suggest you to begin, from Phylosophy (from materialism of Marx or Hegel), then Social Psychology (Field theory of Kurt Lewin). From both theories you can find that Environment is containing of four urgent things (space, matter, time and move). Theese four things have deep relationship and contamination between one and the others.
3. Afterward, You have to know everything is happened in the research area. such weather from meteorology, a kind of land from Geology, a kind of human from anthropology, any moving from physicology, any type of building from architecture, part of body from physiology or anatomy or biology, blood sirculation from medical sciences, or anything else that have relationship with behavior of humenbeing.
4. then, you have to know what the humanbeing's need for their life.
5. if you know the humanbeing's need, so you will know too, what matter they need, and where they will put that matter (environment arrangement).
6. otherwise, you have to use deductive method.
7. Did you know about sociology historical? I think that will be the best approach for your research, you can make compare of environment arrangement in two locals or more, by using sincronis (time) and dicronis (space).
Those are what I know. My Allah bless you!
