It's hard... so many Interior design books are just full of pretty pictures and anicdotal information that really dosent help the layman. I have a library full of them, as well as my college design textbooks. If I were to recomend one, I have a really old copy of <... believe it or not...> Mary Gilliatt's "The Decorating Book". Has actuall practical information that can be helpful.
